New dining center changes coming this fall

As students start to look forward to the warmer weather and the end of the school year, the Superior Dining Hall is looking to make big changes to the dining experience.

By the fall, the dining center will have new meal plans options, upgraded to-go boxes, and some more menu choices added to the dining center.

Instead of the original meal plan options of 5-meals, 14-meals, and 19-meals per week. They have moved on to a new plan that includes scratching the 19-meal option and adding an unlimited meal option.

They also will be adding a 10-meals per week option that is aimed at students in the on-campus apartments.

“Both of those changes were made with the students in mind completely,” the Director of Dining Betsy Helgesen said.

Another big change that you will see by next year are changes to the to-go boxes.

Their plan is to go from plastic-styrofoam boxes to more heavy duty plastic containers in efforts to improve sustainability.   

“What would happen is you pay five dollars, you get to use it and then you bring it back and we will give you a freshly sanitized one,” Helgesen said.

Helgesen went on to say that there is an option to buy a machine that dispenses these plastic containers, but instead they plan to make it a paid position which would give new opportunities for student employment.

As for the menu changes, they will be adding some new choices by next school year that include hand tossed dough for the pizzas and more food from the UMD Farm.

Looking forward for the rest of this year, there will be an online survey going out in the near future.

The survey is focused off of student feedback on what foods they would like to see more of and which foods they could care less about.
