Bulldogs overpower Maine in an 8-2 victory

The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs took the ice at Amsoil Arena tonight for the first night of the two game series against the University of Maine Black Bears.

Many scoring opportunities presented themselves to Duluth tonight as eight different players contributed to the 8-2 victory.

UMD shone with shots leading the Black Bears 15-5 in shots on goal by the end of the first period and rounding out the game with 46 SOG to the Black Bears 18.

Junior defenseman Nick Wolff started off the night by scoring an early goal for the Bulldogs with 17:10 left in the first period. The tally would be Wolff’s first goal of the season with sophomore forward Kobe Roth and sophomore blueliner Scott Perunovich assisting on the strike.

Maine answered back with a goal 12:11 left in the first period followed by the first goal of the year for UMD’s All-American, Scott Perunovich.

The final goal of the first period went to senior center Peter Krieger who scored with 1:25 left on the clock.

UMD shut out Maine in the second period securing four goals while outshooting Maine 32-6.

Sophomore forward Justin Richards rounded out the second period scoring his first collegiate goal with 1:12 left on the clock making the score 7-2 at the end of the period. This is the sophomore center’s second season on the ice completing 12 assists prior to this game.

UMD held the Black Bears in the third period sacrificing no goals but adding one of their own.

Junior winger Riley Tufte, scored the final goal of the game :24 seconds into the third period with assists by Perunovich and Krieger.  

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7:00pm back in Amsoil Arena to finish the series.
