This Saturday, Dec. 1 UMD’s spikeball club is hosting a free spikeball tournament in the campus ice rink.

“We’re doing a double elimination tournament, it’s free for anyone to join. Basically all you have to do is find a partner and sign up through IM leagues,” said Ryan Raskob, the clubs current president.

The tournament will be begin at noon and is scheduled until 5 p.m. Raskob also said there will be a few prizes provided by RSOP, including intramural t-shirts for the winners.

“So far we have fifteen teams registered, and I’m thinking we could fit eight games at a time if we need to,” Raskob said. “It’s free, so the worst thing that can happen is you lose a game of spikeball. It’s all just for fun.”

For those who can’t make it to the tournament on Saturday, have no fear. The group also meets Monday to Thursday every week from 5 to 6 p.m.

“We use Buldog link for all of our stuff,” Raskob said. “If anyone signs up and clicks join, they’ll be on our email list and get daily reminders saying when and where we’re meeting.”

If you aren’t familiar with spikeball or want to learn more about the rules, Raskob recommends checking out a Youtube video like this.

Raskob said he first started playing spikeball the summer before entering college, and immediately fell in love with it.

“I just really love getting together with a few buddies and not having to think about anything. You’re just playing spikeball and having fun. It’s great exercise and something that I just fell in love with,” Raskob said.

Raskob also said that UMD may be hosting the Great Lakes Region Sectional Spikeball Tournament next spring, which includes college teams from Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

“It hasn’t been fully worked out yet, but it looks like it would be around lake March,” Raskob said.
