Men’s Basketball Dominates Opening Classic

UMD Men’s basketball defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Friday, Nov. 9 in the American Family Insurance Classic at Romano Gymnasium, with a final score of 115-81.

The Bulldogs started off strong by getting the first few points of the game. UMD’s first three-point shots were scored by sophomore Caleb Siwek, fifth-year Joshua Brown, and junior Mattie Thompson.

With a minute left in the first half of the game junior Noah Paulson scored a three-point shot. That made the end of the first half 51-34 with the Bulldogs in the lead.

At the beginning of the second half, the Bulldogs scored twelve more points before SEOSU could score a single basket. This made the game 63-34, but the Savage Storm started catching up. In the end, UMD was victorious beating the Savage Storm 115-81.

Fifth-year student Charlie Katona scored the most points on the team with 17. Not far behind him was Thompson with 15 points. UMD team members worked together to achieve 42 rebounds – 10 more than SEOSU. But the Savage Storm got seven steals, only one less than the Bulldogs.

On Saturday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. in the American Family Insurance Classic, the Bulldogs defeated Oklahoma Baptist University by winning 71-52. UMD started strong by taking over the competition with an 8-4 score, their advance helped them capture the lead in the first half of the game with a lead of 19-4.

Second half of the game OBU started taking over by catching up to the Bulldogs but it was no match for UMD’s teamwork giving them the advantage with a score of 45-31 with 12 minutes left to go. At the end of the second half, UMD ended up winning 71-52.

Fifth-year student Austin Andrews led the team with 19 points, not far behind was Katona with 16 points, and Brown with 13. The team worked hard together to get 36 rebounds compared to OBU with 32. But the Bison had 9 steals, tying with the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs all worked together not only just the team but the coaches as well to pull off two wins in the American Family Insurance Classic. The Bulldogs started their regular season off with a good start as the hosts of these games and they will continue to work hard to ensure more UMD victories.

UMD will next face-off against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers in the Romano Gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m.
