The UMD Women’s hockey team dominated at home against the Bemidji State University Beavers in back to back games. Although Saturday’s lead wasn’t as overwhelming as that of Friday’s game, UMD’s skill on the ice represented true Bulldog hockey.

Friday

UMD presented a commanding performance to deliver a victory over the Beavers. Olivia Wallin drove the puck into the net within the first minute of the first period. This gave the Bulldogs momentum that stuck through to the end of the game.

BSU’s Shelby Breiland scored the one and only goal for Bemidji. This had no effects on the Bulldogs finishing the game with an 8-1 win.

Saturday

First period

The Bulldogs started Saturday's game strong with eight shots on goal within the first 10 minutes.

11 minutes into the period there was a penalty against Bemidji, this afforded UMD a power play scoring opportunity. Tova Henderson took this moment to capitalize on scoring the first goal at 12:47 assisted by Danielle Burgen and Mary Kate O’Brien.

UMD continued great pressure against the Beavers by keeping the puck on Bemidji’s side of the ice, only allowing two shots on goal in the first period.

Second Period

The tone and pace of the game transferred into the second period as Olivia Mobley drove the puck into the net at 8:18 securing the second goal. Olivia Wallin assisted this goal by setting Mobley up with a pass that allowed for a breakout.

After the second goal Caitlin Kraemer tripped one of Bemidji’s players resulting in a penalty at 14:00. Although this penalty put the Beavers into a power play, UMD held their own during the penalty kill.

Duluth had another nine shots on goal in the second period, while Bemidji only had six. UMD finished the period in the lead while remaining the dominant team on the ice.

Third Period

The UMD offense did not let up when it came to getting pucks to the net. Around 10 minutes into the third period the Bulldogs had eight more shots on goal, and the Beavers had two.

At 13:28 there was a penalty called against UMD’s Jenna Lawry for cross-checking, and BSU’s Shelby Breiland for roughing.

The Bulldogs had a total of 40 shots on goal proving their excellent control of the puck while Bemidji had a total of 12. UMD ended the game earning goaltender Tindra Holm her second shutout of the season.

After the game, fifth-year Olivia Mobley had some great insights on the level of play throughout the weekend series.

“Although we buried a lot of goals yesterday, which is awesome, I think we got away from our details and our habits. That was a big focus tonight, just making sure that we played good honest bulldog hockey,” said Mobely.
