Six ways to celebrate the start of spring in Duluth

Following the long and brutal winter much of the Midwest faced, most Duluthians are probably experiencing “cabin fever.” With the official first day of spring having been on Mar. 20, the weather is beginning to show signs of warmth and sunshine. Enjoy the start of spring with these six events and places to visit in Duluth that can provide some much needed sunshine, fun and even ice cream.
The Portland Malt Shoppe 2019 Season Opening
When: Apr. 5
More information: According to the 2019 Season Opening Facebook event, this is The Portland Malt Shoppe’s 30th season after opening in 1989.
Gooseberry Falls State Park
More information: The Gooseberry Falls State Park website describes Gooseberry Falls as “the gateway to the North Shore” and “it is known for its spectacular waterfalls, river gorge, Lake Superior shoreline, Civilian Conservation Corps log and stone structures, and north woods wildlife.” Gooseberry Falls is a great place to visit year-round. Gooseberry Falls also has a visitor center, nature store and multi-use and accessible trails.
Succulent Bar Make & Take Event at Hoops Brewing in Duluth
When: Saturday, Mar. 30 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Price: $18-$33, cash or credit are accepted. The price includes the materials needed to plant and decorate your succulent arrangements. If you bring your own container you can get $1 off your total.
More information: Succ It Up Buttercup is Minnesota’s traveling succulent bar. The Facebook event explained that the traveling succulent bar is coming to Duluth on Mar. 30 to Hoops Brewing “for a succulent bar make and take event.” Succ It Up Buttercup “[supplies] hundreds of containers from vintage to modern and a whole bunch of beautiful succulents” for you to choose from.
Spring Up Reggae Dance Party at Bent Paddle
When: Saturday, Mar. 30 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Price: Free entry
More information: The Spring Up Reggae is featuring local artists Prince Paul, Woodblind Jubilee and Dred I Dread at the Bent Paddle Taproom. As well as the music and dancing, there will be a “world-class Caribbean inspired oyster bar” and “Caribbean inspired street tacos.” Veggie options will be available.
Earth Day At The Duluth Farmer's Market
When: Saturday, Apr. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
More information: Celebrate Earth day at the Duluth Farmer’s Market where “every day is Earth Day.” The market will have “music, food, Earth friendly ideas, and so much more” according to the event Facebook page.
Women Hike Duluth
When: Tuesday, Apr. 23 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: The hike starts at the parking lot near Beacon Pointe Resort (on Water Street off of 21st Ave. East) and walk to Leif Erickson Park and back.
Price: Free
More information: This 2.2 mile route is along the beautiful shores of Lake Superior on the Lakewalk. The hike will take less than one hour and children are welcome. The trail is wheelchairs accessible.
