Princesses, Playmates, and Progressives

In the "Princesses, Playmates, and Progressives" podcast, hosts Mallory White, Julia Guttenfelder, and Lily Burns discuss their research on UMD's gender history through an analysis of student media from the 1940s through the 1980s. Using yearbooks, newspapers, and other materials from UMD archives, they uncover how these publications shaped and reflected societal expectations of women. The podcast chronicles historical traditions from homecoming queens to Playboy-sponsored events. Their research also charts important shifts in representation of women during the second wave feminism movement. This podcast was created as a final project for JOUR 2501 American Media History.
