Students in UMD’s School of Fine Arts wrote a letter to Chancellor Lendley Black, Executive Vice Chancellor Fernando Delgado, and Vice Chancellors Steve Keto and Lisa Erwin regarding a Nov. 6 Duluth News Tribune (DNT) article regarding UMD budget cuts.

The letter from students is dated Nov. 19 and states that the School of Fine Arts will be receiving the largest cut at 9 percent. Students also question some of Keto’s comments published in the DNT article, stating they are not only inappropriate, but damaging to the school’s image.

In the article, Keto is quoted as saying, “Kids of today are looking at it like they don’t want $36,000 debt without being able to pay for it afterwards.”

“It is essential that the truth about the prospects of the majority of UMD students who are not, as Keto states, students of ‘engineering and sciences and business,’ be properly represented by our administration,” the letter read. “It is irresponsible for administrators to provide comments like the ones made by Vice Chancellor Keto in the Duluth News Tribune’s article.”
