UMD's Chancellor Black announces retirement

After 12 years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Chancellor Lendley “Lynn” Black announced his retirement in an email to students, faculty and staff Thursday November 4.

Black said there is probably no ideal time to retire but he and his partner, Connie, are ready to spend more time with their grandchildren and have more flexibility in their schedules. He thanked the campus community and said he is pleased with how UMD has adapted to the pandemic years.

His retirement will go into effect over the summer of 2022. He will continue to act as Chancellor for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year.

Shortly after Black’s announcement System President Joan Gabel sent an email regarding two other system wide leadership changes.  A nationwide search for their replacements will begin in the coming weeks.
