The Bark is Hiring: Business Manager and Editor-in-Chief
The Bark is hiring for the 2025-2026 school year! With many of the current team members graduating this semester, now is the perfect opportunity to get involved in your student newspaper. Among the job openings that will be available for next year are the Business Manager and the Editor-in-Chief positions, open for applicants until April 11. For the position of Business Manager, we are looking for an applicant who is proficient in the business side of running an organization.
This includes:
Digital & print advertising sales
Marketing campaign creation
Payroll and budget management
Collaborating with web & social media content creation
Media Analytics
Leadership and team building
Journalism-specific experience is NOT a requirement for this position, though it is beneficial.
Requirements:
Must have access to the internet and a functioning cell phone.
Must be a part or full-time UMD student and commit to one one-year appointment
Preferred qualifications:
Familiarity with business and/or media ethics and interest in media, marketing or sales.
Business, customer service or marketing experience preferred, but not required.
Leadership experience and an interest in creating a positive team environment.
Business Manager Responsibilities:
Manage the financial/business side of The Bark, the student-run media, overseeing payroll, budgeting, advertising sales, promotional sponsorships and marketing. This position is paid.
Responsible for all decisions pertaining to advertising; for print and digital assets. Generate student-focused ad sales leads, track sales for the admin, finalize sales contracts and maintain client relationships.
Build and lead a student marketing and sales team to best reach all UMD students for our advertising clients. Ad work may also include consulting with the graphic designer on ads, inserts or special publications.
The Business Manager works with leadership to establish advertising rates and agreements; coordinates payroll with admin, plans and implements marketing and social/PR to grow audience reach and media value.
Reports directly to the Editor-in-Chief, actively participates in weekly meetings, communicates in a timely manner
For the position of Editor-in-Chief, we are looking for an applicant who has a passion and familiarity with journalism.
This includes:
Leadership and teambuilding
Enforce deadlines
Edit and publish student works
Lead pitch meetings
Online/print content management
Requirements:

Preferred qualifications:
Understanding of journalism standards and ethics
Ability to work with a diverse student staff
Leadership and management skills
Familiarity with news writing, social media and website management
Ability to lead a team to deadlines, publishing content on a weekly basis
Editor-in-Chief Responsibilities:
Leader of The Bark and responsible for all decisions pertaining to the production of The Bark. This includes leadership in style, content, tone, quality, layout, production and editorial viewpoint. With input from the Editorial Advisor, the Editor-in-Chief establishes guidelines and deadlines, supervises and coordinates staffing, and has responsibility for enforcing all rules, regulations and standards.
Recruits, hires, leads and inspires the Editorial Team along with the Editorial Advisor to produce daily, weekly, and monthly publications. Leads the visual and art teams to plan, create and design print editions, advertising campaigns, graphics, etc. Supervises marketing and promotions branding efforts for The Bark. Works with the Business Manager and Advisor to create budgets and advertising sales targets.
Coordinates publishing of print materials and online content. Edits and approves content and layout for digital, print, and social media.
Leads weekly meetings and provides guidance on questions of journalistic efforts. » Coordinates all hiring for the Business Team, the Visual/Art Team, and the Editorial Team.
Develops and presents annual Student Services Fee proposal based on current and future financial information. Represents The Bark staff on the UMD Board of Publications.
Attend public events such as a Kirby table for The Bark for a minimum of one hour per month.
Expected to respond to other team members in a timely manner.
