UMD football knocks off SCSU at home 34-21 under rainy Thursday night lights

Under the rainy Thursday night lights, the University of Minnesota Duluth football team downed Saint Cloud State University 34-21 at Malosky Stadium for its first home victory of the 2017 campaign.

The Bulldogs got the ball rolling taking the game's opening drive and turning it into points. The nine play, 70 yard drive was capped off by junior running back Anthony Wood scampering into the end zone for a 5 yard touchdown. Wood, coming off a 35-yard, one touchdown performance last weekend, found the end zone twice tonight and accounted for 128 of the 288 Bulldog rushing yards.

Sophomore quarterback Ben Everhart was stellar tonight throwing for 183 yards on 10 of 19 passing attempts with four touchdowns. Before the expiration of the first quarter, Everhart connected with senior wide receiver James Conner for a 52-yard touchdown strike. On the very next Bulldog drive, Everhart tossed another 52-yard touchdown on a rope to senior wide receiver Dominic Bonner. Bonner finished the evening with three receptions for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

On a night where the offense shined and looked borderline unstoppable, The Bulldog defense did a solid job allowing 283 yards of total offense, 97 of which came in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.

“It was the first time we played a complete game this season. UMD head coach Curt Wiese said. “Offense, defense, special teams, everyone had a hand in tonight. It was a solid effort and I thought our guys came out with a lot of energy and executed.”

The relentless Bulldog offense accumulated 471 total yards of offense in tonight’s contest and dominated in time of possession with 37:06.  

The Bulldogs hit the road next Saturday October 7, taking on the Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead. Kickoff is set for 2 o'clock p.m.
