Bulldogs fall 2-1 to Huskies in series finale

St. Cloud State sneaks by the University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team tonight defeating the Bulldogs 2-1 in the final regular season meeting between the two teams.

UMD got out in front first tonight when freshman winger Nick Swaney put home a rebound that trickled right out into the slot just before the midway point of the opening period. 1:36 later Jake Wahlin equalized the game for the Huskies and 1-1 is where the game would stay until the 14:50 mark of the third period.

Just after the Bulldogs successfully killed off their fifth penalty of the night, St. Cloud State’s Patrick Newell corralled a loose puck behind the net and snuck it passed an out of position Hunter Shepard.

For the second night in a row UMD was out-shot. The Huskies put 28 shots on net compared to the Bulldogs 20. It was another stellar night for UMD’s penalty kill as they blanked SCSU in that department killing all five man advantage opportunities. The penalty kill was highlighted by the 1:52 of 5-on-3 play killed off by the Bulldogs in the first period. The Bulldogs were unsuccessful on their lone power play attempt.

“I'm proud of our team but tonight we looked a little bit like a tired team and our guys battled, Shep played well and our killers played great,” said UMD head coach Scott Sandelin.

UMD hits the road next weekend to wrap up its final two regular season meetings with Denver University.
