UMD Men and Women's Basketball Double Header To Kick Off February

UMD Men’s Basketball faced Concordia St. Paul (CSP) at 1 p.m. on Feb. 1. The game was a close one at 88-87 for a Bulldog victory. On the same day at 3 p.m. the Women’s basketball team played CSP. It was a tough game with UMD losing to Concordia 86-61. 

The Men started off a little slow giving CSP a beginning lead of 14-7 a few minutes in. The Bulldogs turned it around shortly after with a 9 point run, making the score 16-14 still near the first half of the game. Again, near the end of the first half, UMD pulled out another 9 point run, giving them the lead with a score of 39-35. The Bulldogs worked hard to earn the lead into the second half with a first half score of 47-44.

In the second half with a quarter left to go of the game, the Bulldogs were leading the Golden Bears 36-31. CSP turned it back around getting a 10 point run with two minutes left making the score 85-83. It all started to come down to the last minute of the game, both teams were determined to win. The teams were a few points apart and took many timeouts within the last minute to determine what plays would be best to get a victory. It ultimately ended with UMD winning 88-87. 

This game resulted in UMD holding a record of 14-7, with CSP’s record at 16-6. UMD had 31 rebounds, 6 turnovers and 9 steals which was triple the number of steals CSP had, with 4 of them being from Kole Hanson. CSP had 30 rebounds, 3 steals and 14 turnovers which was almost double the amount UMD had. 

Austin Andrews scored the most points this game with a total of 29 points. Behind him was Charlie Katona with 22, Joshua Brown with 16 and Hanson with 6. The Bulldog’s worked together with the goal to defeat CSP who, statistically, is ranked higher. The Bulldog’s not only had great teamwork, but great coaching that helped them start February off with a victory.

The women’s basketball started off with CSP taking the lead with an 11-7 score. But near the end of the first quarter, UMD went on a straight 5 point run ending the quarter with a lead score of 19-17. In the second quarter, UMD lost the lead to CSP ending the 1st half of the game with a disadvantage of 42-32.

The Bulldog’s tried to keep up with the Golden Bears, but fell behind giving CSP the lead of 70-47 to end the third quarter. In the last quarter UMD went on a 5 point run, but it was no match for CSP as they ended up winning with a score of 86-6.

After the game, UMD held a 7-14 record and CSP’s overall was 20-2. UMD had 20 rebounds, 14 turnovers and 5 steals. While CSP had 38 rebounds, 13 turnovers and 8 steals. The leader in points for UMD was Lexi Karge with 16 points. Following behind was Johanna Miller with 10 points, Claire Bjorge with 8 points and Vanessa Bickford with 7 points. Although they were defeated, the coaches and players worked hard as a team to try and make a comeback.

Both teams play again on Wednesday, Feb. 5 starting at 5:30pm. in Romano Gymnasium.
